DAUGHTERS OF THE FUTURE
waltraud900
“I want to see the world. The northern lights, the oceans. Learn to sail. Be a carefree child again. For the life of me, I want to listen to my inner voice. For the life of me, I want to stop worrying about what other people think of me. Just be. Just be angry. Loudly angry.”
It’s the calm before the storm. The largest fleet in the history of war, with its thousands of ships and armies from all over Greece, is stuck in the port of Aulis. A week-long calm paralyses their sails, preventing them from leaving for Troy, where King Agamemnon intends to wage war.
The unrest spreads and a sacrifice is demanded to please the gods: his daughter Iphigenia must die. When Iphigenia realises her fate, she does not resist, but welcomes her own death. Please what?
Together with a choir of young people, waltraud900 questions the material from today’s perspective and reinvents the story of Iphigenia. Is Iphigenia a heroine? What sacrifices are the daughters of the future no longer available for? Is it possible to resist the family at all? And what do we stand for?
DAUGHTERS OF THE FUTURE was awarded the Integration Prize of the City of Düsseldorf 2024 and was selected as one of 15 productions for the interim selection of the Theatertreffen der Jugend in Berlin.
