Tümay Kılınçel
Based on Raqs, the so-called belly dance or oriental dance, WE ♥ 2 RAQS negotiates and deconstructs orientalist and colonial image structures. Through their interpretation of very different genres – Oriental dance, tribal fusion, American tribal style, fusion, voguing, baladi and contemporary dance – the dancers create a collective Raqs body in the choreographic performance. Accompanied by kanun player Dima Dawood, percussionist Sultan Kara and singer Leila Moon, the work recontextualises dance as a feminist, self-empowering practice that becomes visible as an art form on institutional stages.

About the artist
Tümay Kılınçel is an artist in Movement & Body. In her artistic practice, Kılınçel explores fears and stereotypes in connection with bodies and movements that are influenced by social power structures. Dance training & further education in Berlin, Giessen, Istanbul, Cairo, Rishikesh (India) and Lagos (Nigeria). Kılınçel has held scholarships and residencies at CAA, Tanzpraxis, Guest Fellowship Pact Zollverein, danceWEB, among others: Tarabya, Atelier Galata, Take Care-Heart, Flausen, Houseclub. Her work has been shown at Tanzplattform Deutschland and Rhein/Main, ZÜRICH TANZT, Festival de la Cité Lausanne, among others. Kılınçel received the Performing Arts Award of the state capital Düsseldorf in 2023. Her new production MELODRAMA SUITS HER – A REVENGE EVENING will go on tour in 2025.
