We live in a society dedicated to the idea of progress: a democratic, scientific and technological progress that will supposedly bring us all social justice, prosperity and a good life. It is precisely this idyllic notion of progress that Nicoleta Esinencu takes aim at, revealing its violent aspects: The author and director shows how the progress of the capitalist system ceaselessly creates new forms of exploitation and colonisation. How the violence in the relations between West and East progresses, further intensified by the pandemic in which migrant workers are exposed to the conditions of Western societies. The performance borrows from Lehrstück and Agit Prop and, under the motto “Enjoy Killjoy”, creates thematic references to theorists such as Sara Ahmed.
